Speedster GPS for iPhone

What is Speedster?

Speedster GPS shows you your speed and altitude in real-time using the GPS on your iPhone 3G. It will not work on a first-generation iPhone or iPod Touch. It also tracks your speed, distance travelled, and altitude as you drive, jog, or boat. Speedster is a fun app - its not something to be relied upon in court. While the calculations and data we show are accurate to the 12th degree it is based on AGPS data on the iPhone which can vary from being extremely accurate to not so accurate.

Features:

  • 1.11 NEW Added GPS Accuracy data display

GPS Usage and Limitations and Accuracy

Speedster GPS requires a GPS-enabled iPhone to get reliable numbers and because it is based on the GPS data depending on your location and GPS acquisition it may take Speedster a few seconds at the beginning to get accurate speeds. If you get wild numbers then Speedster is not getting accurate information from your iPhone. It may not work well in cities with high-rises for example as satelite coverage is difficult to get with buildings blocking them.

GPS on your iPhone first starts out with Wifi/cellular triangulation which gives a decent idea of area but is not usable for speed calculations. Next the GPS will kick in within 10-20 seconds and you'll get accuracy from 20 to 3 meters depending on many factors such as cloud cover or buildings. There are even times when the GPS simply can't get a signal and you may need to restart Speedster to get the GPS to try again.

We've build Speedster with plenty of testing from highway patrol officers, police chiefs, regular driving folk, and boaters and have found it to be pretty accurate. With test data and usage tests we've created filtering algorithms to try and improve the speed measurements as best as possible. However sometimes because of GPS signal fluctuations, you may find that Speedster works best at speeds over 20-30MPH, however because of our time-average and GPS accuracy filters it should work decently under that speed as well.

Designed for the iPhone

Speedster has been designed to take advantage of the iPhone's unique abilities and interface. The speedometer hand moves like a real speedometer and you can scroll through the list of tracked speeds as you would any other iPhone application.
