Start Note2Self. Bring it up to your ear and start talking. Bring it back down in front of you and the recording stops and is saved or emailed automatically. It's a one-trick pony, but it's a really useful trick. Only on the iPhone.
Designed for the iPhone
Note2Self has been designed to take advantage of the iPhone's unique abilities and interface. We use the proximity sensor to turn off the screen when you bring it up to your face; the accelerometer to toggle recording on and off; and the beautiful-to-develop in Cocoa Touch foundation to bring a gorgeous looking and easy to use application.
What about file sizes?
You can record audio for as long as you have free space. Note2Self gives you two encoding options to help you decide the quality of the voice message. You can currently choose from an AIFF uncompressed format or a 4x compressed IMA4 format. Both are playable with Apple's QuickTime software.
While Note2Self can record files as big as you have free space, emailing them simply will not work for sizes larger than 10MB in size. Version 2.00 adds a new WiFi Sharing system letting you download large notes to any browser. We've tested it up to 200MB, but according to our instruments it should be unlimited by size.
Why do I need it?
As wonderful as our iPhones are, they still lack an easy way to create actionable items with the most natural method of output we have: our voice. Note2Self lets you record voice notes and save them in a Saved Notes list and/or send them to a preset email address without having to select a contact, type text, or any other distraction that could prove dangerous or difficult while you are driving or full of luggage. For many of us email is our to-do list; if I have an email sitting in my Inbox, I can take action on it. The key to having Note2Self unlock your productivity is to have it be incredibly streamlined and focused.
Note2Self Sending Service
While the iPhone email client is capable of sending attachments, this ability is not yet available to Apple iPhone Developers. So for Note2Self to send your email voice notes, we have set up a passthrough server that accepts your voice notes via a web service and then sends the email to your recipient. Privacy concerns are a huge deal for us so we structured this to keep things as private for you as possible: We do not store your recordings; we do not store recipient information. Beyond rotating web/mail logs we only store as little information as possible to flag SPAM behavior (i.e. large amounts of emails from the same device in a short period of time). For more information on privacy read our Note2Self Service Page.
